HEIF photo output

HEIF to JPG converter

Turn .heif photos into ordinary JPEG files in this browser tab. The same bounded workbench that handles iPhone HEIC reads the HEIF container, decodes its primary HEVC image locally, and checks every JPG before it is offered for download.

Local HEIC workbench

One source queue, verified outputs

Your selected files remain in memory while you move between the HEIC output pages. Conversion bytes stay in this tab; ordinary page analytics can still record page visits and coarse, file-free events.

Source files

HEIC and HEIF only. Header inspection is bounded to 256 KB before admission.

Drag HEIC or HEIF files here

choose files from this device, or paste a copied photo

Decoder boundary

The active HEIC decoder cannot be interrupted inside the installed library. Cancel stops queued decode work and discards a late current result; ZIP checksumming is separately abortable and stops its active stream.

Multi-image HEIC

The container item count is reported after decode. This release exports the first visual image; HEIC motion sequences are not preserved.

Memory varies by device

Compressed file size is not decoded memory. The workbench uses a device-aware cap and may ask you to process fewer photos.

How this workflow works

  1. 1Choose one or more .heif or .heic files. The container brand is read from a bounded header, so a renamed file is judged by its bytes, not its extension.
  2. 2Review the local preview, then rotate, flip, reorder, resize or rename. Choose a quality and a background for any transparent pixels.
  3. 3Convert. HEVC-coded HEIF images are decoded one at a time and re-encoded as JPEG, then checked for MIME, magic bytes, extension, dimensions and browser decode.
  4. 4Download a single JPG, or package every successful result into a ZIP. Files that fail stay listed and retryable.

Limits stated before conversion

  • HEIF is a container. Images coded with HEVC decode here; a HEIF that actually holds AV1 (an AVIF) is refused with a pointer to the AVIF converters.
  • EXIF, GPS, capture date and ICC profiles are not copied into the JPG by the installed decoder.
  • Only the first visual image of a burst, sequence or multi-image HEIF is exported.
  • HDR and 10-bit sources become browser-rendered 8-bit SDR JPEG pixels.

When this output is useful

Share a photo from an Android phone that saved it as .heif with someone whose app only opens JPG.

Attach HEIF camera shots to forms, marketplaces and email services that reject the extension.

Convert a mixed folder of .heif and .heic files into one consistently named JPG set.

The local-processing boundary

Selecting a file gives this page temporary access to that file in browser memory. The conversion path does not upload file bytes, file names, pixels, or extracted metadata. The website can still load its normal code and record page-level analytics; product events must contain only coarse counts, output type, and status. Clear the workbench or close the tab to release retained previews and results.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HEIF and HEIC?

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is the container standard. HEIC is the name and extension used when the images inside that container are compressed with HEVC, which is what iPhones write. Many Android phones and some cameras save the same kind of file with a .heif extension, so in practice most .heif and .heic photos convert the same way here.

Why did my Android phone save photos as HEIF?

Several Android camera apps offer a high-efficiency or HEIF option to save storage, and some enable it by default. The photos look identical on the phone, but many desktop programs, websites and older apps cannot open them. Converting to JPG gives you a copy that opens everywhere, and switching the camera back to JPEG stops new HEIF files being created.

Can I convert HEIF to JPG on Windows?

Yes. Open this page in Edge, Chrome or Firefox and select the .heif files from File Explorer; nothing is installed. Windows Photos can display many HEIF files after you add the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and some files also need the HEVC Video Extensions, but that only views the file rather than giving you a JPG copy.

Does it work on .heic files too?

Yes. Both extensions enter the same workbench, and the decision is made from the container brand in the file header rather than from the name. The HEIC to JPG page offers exactly the same controls if that is the name you were looking for.

Why was my HEIF file refused?

The header is checked before decoding. A file whose brand says it is AVIF is refused because it needs an AV1 decoder, a file without a readable image extent is refused because its memory cost cannot be estimated safely, and a file whose images use a codec the decoder does not support fails with a decode error rather than producing a blank JPG. The format detector shows exactly what the header contains.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The file bytes are decoded and re-encoded in this browser tab and the site has no file-upload endpoint. The page itself still loads its code and records coarse, file-free analytics, and you can confirm the boundary in your browser Network panel.

Can I convert HEIF to PNG or PDF instead?

Yes. The PNG and PDF workbenches accept the same .heif files, and switching output keeps the photos you already selected. Choose PNG to avoid a second lossy encode, or PDF to combine several photos into one document.

HEIF, HEIC and JPG compared

The extension tells you what the file claims to be; the container brand tells you what is inside. This is how the three names relate when you convert.
