Local boundary
Selecting a file gives this tab temporary local access to its bytes. Conversion code runs in the browser and this workflow does not send file bytes, names, content, or precise dimensions to analytics. Ordinary page requests and coarse product events still use the network. Files and object URLs remain until you remove them, clear the workbench, or close the tab.
Raster work is limited to one or two concurrent browser jobs. Some canvas work can still occupy the main thread; cancellation is cooperative and an in-flight browser decode may finish before its result is discarded.

Limitations
Read before processing
- Files are processed in browser memory. Site assets and coarse analytics still use ordinary network requests; file bytes and names are excluded from events.
- Canvas-based output does not preserve source EXIF, GPS, capture date or embedded ICC profiles.
- A download is exposed only when the result reports JPG bytes that agree with its MIME and extension.
Why people convert WebP to JPG
WebP is Google's web image format, and because most sites now serve it, an image saved with "Save image as…" very often lands on your disk as a .webp file. Browsers display it perfectly, which is exactly why the problem is invisible until you try to attach it to an email, drop it into a document, add it to a marketplace listing, or send it to a print service — and it is rejected. JPG is the safe destination because essentially every piece of software written in the last thirty years reads it.

Frequently asked questions
Why did my downloaded image save as WebP?
Because the website served it that way. Modern sites send WebP to browsers that support it since it is smaller than JPEG at comparable quality, and the browser saves whatever it was sent. The file is a perfectly valid image; it is the software you want to open it in that does not read the format.
Can this convert an animated WebP?
No, and it will tell you so rather than exporting one arbitrary frame. JPG holds a single still image, so an animated WebP has no correct single-file JPG equivalent. Animated sources are rejected at the signature check instead of being silently flattened.
How is JPG output checked?
The browser encoder must return the expected MIME and binary signature. The result is decoded again and its dimensions are checked before download.
What happens to source metadata?
Canvas re-encoding strips EXIF, GPS and capture date. ICC profiles are not preserved, and HDR or wide-gamut input may be converted to SDR.
